Mauricio DeSouza

Bio

Mauricio graduated Magna Cum Laude from Rowan University with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance and Jazz Studies.  He holds a Teaching Certificate in Music for grades K-12 from William Paterson University.  He received a certificate for outstanding scholastic achievement from the Golden Key International Honor Society.  Mauricio studied drum technique and jazz studies with Joe Morello for 11 years.

Mauricio has been teaching private lessons since 2015.  Since 1992, Mauricio has been performing regularly in bands, groups, and ensembles ranging from Rock, Jazz, and Classical music. He currently is working as a Jazz/Brazilian drummer and as a bandleader/sideman.

Mauricio has performed as a band leader at the Blue Note NYC, NJPAC, Festival International de Jazz de Quebec, Westfield Downtown Jazz Festival, DiMenna Center, Kitano Hotel, Saint Peter’s Church, and Gates Pub (Brazil).  Mauricio and his music have been featured in Jazz Times Magazine, Hot House Jazz Magazine, NYC Jazz Record, WBGO, Music Choice, Pandora, Sirius XM, Jazz Week, and numerous radio stations in the US, Brazil, Canada, and Poland.

Mauricio’s teaching style is relaxed and friendly, yet focused.  He believes a basic knowledge of technique and music theory are important to the student’s development and growth. He is open to working on styles of music that are interesting to the student.  He always strives to keep his students engaged and evolving as musicians.
